English rockers Muse's 2022 album Will of the People might have received mixed (though mainly positive) reviews from critics, but fans had just one thing to say about the Will of the People World Tour that followed: WOW.
The year-and-a-half long tour spun over 90 shows and 3 continents, grossing over $100 million. Apart from bangers like "Won't Stand Down" and "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween" the Muse live experience was supercharged by the imposing, post-apocalyptic stage props, lights show and out-of-this-world visuals. And that impressive stage design couldn't have been realized if it wasn't for Vectorworks Spotlight.
The Stage Concept
To achieve this stunning live effect, the Muse team collaborated with known professionals Bryan Seigel, Jesse Lee Stout, Sooner Routhier and Matt Geasey. In order to bring to life the album's concept of politics, disorder and a dystopian future world, they set on creating a sort of a deconstructed building with the album protagonist Will poking out as a giant, nightmarish figure. But long before they put it to production, the four designers started experimenting within the 3D environment of Vectorworks Spotlight.
Rocking with Spotlight
In a recent interview for Vectorwork's blog, Seigel shares that the biggest advantage of Spotlight is the possibility to simulate how design conceptions will actually function in a fully built-out virtual rig. “Once the model is built, we can plug in any design concept and immediately evaluate if it will work or determine what needs to change,” says Seigel.
“For the eight sets of lighting ladders, schematic views were an excellent way to ensure that the design revisions were always synced up with our paperwork. We took advantage of the ability to customize the 2D front components of our lighting devices and enjoyed that we could use our existing label legends in the schematic views,” concludes Seigel.
Thus, Vectorworks helped Muse complete one of their highest grossing tours ever and brought the concept of Will of the People truly to life.
